Laurie Shifrin, a Seattle resident, is a favorite teacher and lecturer in the Puget Sound area as well as across the United States. Her third book, Batik Gems, released in late 2008, is a showcase of her unique quilt designs and her everlasting love of batiks.
Laurie has authored 2 previous books - Batik Beauties and Batiks and Beyond. Being a published author opened up the world of international teaching, and she regularly travels around the US and Canada to share her enthusiasm and affinity for batiks, and her no-nonsense quilting tips. Her television appearances include Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson which is still shown in reruns, and more recently a feature on Art Zone, In Studio on The Seattle Channel.
Many quilters know her from her many years as manager of the wonderful Seattle quilt shop, In The Beginning that closed its doors a few years ago. Laurie continues as Technical Editor for In The Beginning publications including books and patterns.
In addition to her new book, Laurie has recently started her own pattern company, Laurie Shifrin Designs, from which 8 new patterns have been released combining batiks with other styles of quilting fabrics. Murky Pond in the Berkshires and Mango Tango, the two classes she'll be teaching here, are among these patterns.
If you thought curves were hard, Laurie gives you an easy, no-piecing technique for adding flanges to the curved edge, then appliquéing the curved pieces to the background, in a class that has been a great hit all over the country! This project looks great in any style of fabrics, from lush batiks to gorgeous Asian fabrics; from large Kaffe Fasset prints to small geometrics - they all work. And, even the beginning quilter (with basic rotary and sewing machine skills) can have a great time making this quilt. It's a project you'll want to make over and over!
In class, Laurie will share her thoughts on selecting fabrics for a cohesive quilt, and she'll demonstrate the different steps and show many tips streamlining the quilting process. You will be sewing in class and have your choice of making one of 3 sizes: Crib, Lap or Double/Queen. The pattern, Mango Tango, is required for class.
